*abandon

さる【去る】

1 〔離れる〕 leave; depart (from…); take leave of…; take one's departure; go away [off]; move [get] away; quit.

●遠くに去る go far away; leave for a distant place

・国を去る leave one's country

・世を去る pass away; depart (from) this life

・職を去る resign [retire from, quit] one's office [position, post, work]

・公職を去る retire [resign] from public service

・母校を去る depart from [leave behind, quit] one's alma mater

・表舞台から去る leave [depart from, quit, move away from] public life

・去り難い ⇒さりがたい.

●去れ! Be off [Away] with you!

・(この仕事から)君に去られては困る. It would make things difficult for me if you left (this project).

・そうした考えが常に念頭を去らない. That idea stays in my head all the time and won't go away.

・遠く去ってしまった青春時代を思い出す. I recall those long-gone years of my adolescence.

3 〔消える･なくなる〕 pass; be gone; be over; leave.

●台風は去った. The typhoon has passed.

・痛みはじきに去った. The pain soon passed.

・川が決壊する危険はもう去った. The danger that the river might break its banks has passed [is over].

・雨雲が去って空が明るくなった. The rainclouds passed and the sky cleared up.

・一難去ってまた一難. One misfortune passed and another took its place.

4 〔(時間･空間的に)隔たる〕 be distant [away] 《from…》; be removed 《from…》.

●東京を去ること 50 キロ 50 kilometers away [distant] from Tokyo.

●それは今を去ること 20 年前のことだ. It dates back twenty years. | It happened twenty years ago.

・八王子は都心を去ること西に 40 キロである. Hachiōji lies 40 kilometers (to the) west of the center of Tokyo.

5 〔除く〕 put aside; get rid of….

●雑念を去る put aside idle thoughts

・虚飾を去る set aside [get rid of] ostentation [affectation].

6 〔(動詞の連用形について)すっかり…する〕 completely do.

●忘れ去る completely forget 《sb, sth》

・葬り去る completely bury 《the past》; completely destroy 《the enemy》.

●去る10 日 〔この前の〕 on the 10th inst. [instant, of this month]; 〔先月の〕 the 10th of last month

・去る10 月 5 日 October 5th last; last Oct. 5th.
